10-inch tablets’ battle: 8.9” Kindle Fire HD, 9.7” iPad 3 and 10.6” Microsoft Surface serials

Nivedh Ramachandran | 8:06 PM | Best Blogger Tips

Larger display from smartphones as well as tablets generally offers brand new experience to users. With the stirring interest in Microsoft Surface this month, we once again come to such a question: Which larger-size (around 10”) tablet should I get?

To solve this problem, we should find out what we exactly need. We definitely will not spend 2 hundred dollars more on a mobile device that exclusively delivers elementary functions including browsing the Internet, reading eBooks, watching online videos, playing downloaded light games and the like, which can be easily achieved by most portable smartphones and cheap 7-inch tablets. It should be something parallel to computers, which can be used to do more complicated errands like editing documents.

8.9” Kindle Fire HD

Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD 8.9” is absolutely a wonderful work other than a merely amplified version with marginally better configuration. Larger display, HD resolution and other improved details provide great surprise for users, especially for Kindle fans. However, it is an exceptional android tablet at most. It might be a good gadget for pure entertainments while you have to turn to PC or Mac in most cases.

9.7” iPad

iPad is unquestionably a great tablet with its seamless service and awesome design. Compared to other tablets, we have heard about far more lauded things of iPad instead of unbearable complaints. It empowers us to complete many advanced operations due to its outstanding iOS platform, which shows overwhelming advantages upon Android OS. Similar to Kindle Fire HD 8.9”, we cannot yet say goodbye to personal computer although ipad keeps us company all the time. Touch screen brings along convenience as well as restrictions.

10.6” Microsoft Surface serials

We know that Surface RT is actually another rival in 10-inch tablet market while Surface Pro combines computer-based Windows OS and tablets’ convenience together, which is just what college students and work-related people are looking for. One of my friends once asked me which tablet was suitable for her as she needed to write and edit frequently. I told her to wait for the upcoming Surface Pro with a revealing of its slightly costly price. Another merit to make Surface titles stand out might fall to its special type/touch cover, which adds freedom and flexibility to our operation.

Apparently, there is a massive selection of tablets for people who exclusively use 10” tablets for entertainments and aspire to excellent UI experience. Perhaps iPad is their preference. However, for people who need a work-related tablet, it’s easy to make a final decision.

5 reasons: Why you should get Nexus 7 other than Kindle Fire HD

Nivedh Ramachandran | 8:12 AM | | | Best Blogger Tips

People are currently inclined to make a comparison among Kindle Fire HD, Google Nexus 7 and new iPad. Here I leave out iPad specifically but focus on the other two as apple titles appear to be those rich folks'game. People cannot make a decision between Google Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD primarily out of the latter's lure of a 16-G-storage as well as its convenience to read Kindle books. Consequently, most gadget geeks vote for Nexus 7 unswervingly. 5 reasons are put forward in this article to help you figure it out that why you should get Nexus 7.

photo from

1. Faster speed
We do not exclusively read eBooks on a $200 tablet but also embrace a selection of entertainments. Compared to Kindle Fire HD's Dual-Core processor, Nexus 7 has won this battle with its Tegra Quad-Core processor, which unquestionably makes our playing faster and hearty. We enjoy speed and Nexus 7 decreases our chances of groaning.

2. More sufficient experience
16 G is far from enough to constitute sufficient user experience. Nexus 7 delivers a variety of sensors including gyroscope, magnetometer, accelerometer so as to meet the demands of people who are keen on stimulative experience when playing games like racing and flight shooting. On the contrary, Kindle Fire series come with none of these sensors, which results in user's lack of dynamic orgasm.

3. More reliable application (GPS)
Nexus 7 supports built-in GPS function without necessary network connection, which is indeed good news for customers and edges itself into a reliable gadget while many GPS applications based on other devices become totally useless once unconnected to network. Moreover, Nexus 7 can be converted into a dedicated GPS navigator if apps like TomTom are installed on it. However, there is no GPS-related service found on Kindle Fire HD, which has come down to one of its irreparable weaknesses.

4. More flexible system
In all probability, Nexus 7's stock Android 4.1 Jelly Bean system pushes it to the peak of 7-inch tablets. The 4.1 Android OS comes with a significantly smoother interface alongside the Google Now service, which acquires qualification for Nexus 7 to compete with apple iOS. We can feel free to download and install APK files both from the device itself and from computer to make full use of diversified apps, nevertheless, it is sort of inconvenient to install apps on Kindle Fire HD due to its forked Android OS, which aims for its proprietary Amazon market and confines our freedom of installing apps from general Android market. As a result, the open & flexible Android platform has been turned into an awkward one on Kindle Fire HD.

5. More comprehensive service
Apparently, Amazon releases its budget Kindle Fire titles for selling its products ranging from eBooks to other forms of content (audios, videos, apps, etc.). Kindle users are largely restricted to Amazon store and eventually have to shop there. This is parallel to what apple is doing while apple does a remarkably better job than Amazon. Fortunately, we are free to decide where to trade on Nexus 7 and therefore Google play is not the solo option. As far as I know, there are more free apps available on Google Play than those on Amazon store. We don't have to spend on things that are provided in free versions somewhere.

As Kindle Fire HD has its lengths, of course, Nexus 7 takes on its demerits correspondingly. We should not ignore that there is neither extension slot nor camera on Nexus 7 together with some other minor defects such as battery. But on the whole, Nexus 7 is fairly worth the money among a host of 7-inch tablets.
